Saving Lives Through Strategic Investment: Strengthening Blood Services for Zero Malaria Deaths

At Malaria Free Uganda (MFU), we believe that strategic, well-directed resources save lives. A clear example of this is our work to strengthen theĀ Uganda Blood Transfusion Service (UBTS), directly addressing a critical gap in the fight against severe malaria.

The Challenge

Severe Malaria and Life-Threatening Anemia
Malaria remains a leading cause of death in Uganda, with severe malaria often resulting in life-threatening anemia, especially in children under five. In fact, malaria accounts forĀ 30-50% of all blood used in the country. Without immediate access to safe blood transfusions, these patients along with mothers in obstetric emergencies and accident victims face a high risk of death. This reality places immense pressure on UBTS to maintain a consistent, safe supply.

Mobilizing Resources for Critical Equipment
Recognizing this urgent need, and in close alignment with theĀ Ministry of Health’s National Malaria Elimination Division (NMED) goal of ZERO MALARIA DEATHS, MFU mobilized domestic resources through our partners.

In December 2024, withĀ over UGX 1.3 billionĀ mobilized, significant contribution of Ecobank Uganda, we procured and handed over new vital equipment to the Nakasero Blood Bank. This included:

This equipment is not just hardware; it is a lifeline. The impact on UBTS’s operations has been immediate and significant:

  • Increased Blood Component Production:Ā The new equipment has enabled UBTS to separate whole blood into its components (red cells, platelets, plasma). At the Nakasero center alone, they can now prepareĀ 80% of the 170,000 units of blood receivedĀ into components. This means one donation can save multiple lives, and specific products like platelets are available for cancer patients and those with severe anemia.
  • Faster Response to Emergencies:Ā By improving the efficiency of processing, the equipment has drastically reduced the turnaround time, ensuring blood products are ready and available for patients when they need them most.
  • Enhanced and Safer Storage:Ā New refrigerators and freezers have increased storage capacity and improved the quality of blood products. The platelet agitators ensure that these fragile, life-saving cells remain effective for transfusion.
  • Supporting the Entire Health System:Ā While the primary goal is to combat malaria-related deaths, this strengthened capacity also supports maternal health, pediatric care, and emergency response for trauma victims.
  • This partnership exemplifies how domestic resource mobilization, guided by national priorities, translates directly into lives saved. By equipping UBTS to manage severe malaria-related anemia, we are taking tangible steps toward a malaria-free Uganda.
